About Me
I am a local artist living and working in Edmonds, Washington. I have a wide interest in subjects and create portraits, figurative works, landscapes, still life paintings, and the occasional abstract. I received my formal arts training at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia in the early 2000’s. My figurative works are influenced by such artists as Mark Tennant and Malcolm Liepke and strive to capture unscripted, spontaneous moments in life. My Work I am drawn to images that evoke, not just describe. Images that suggest movement or intro-spection. A gesture, or a thought. Images that make you feel something emotional or tangible. A place or a pose, or the texture of a thing. I strive to create paintings that will grab you and draw you in, that communicate something to you rather than simply show. Something whimsical, sultry, energetic or sincere. Something that will cause you to take notice, to stop and look...and maybe look longer...and then, like a good song, decide you’d like to add it to your collection to look at and evoke that certain something whenever you glance its way. My Practice I’ve worked as an artist and teacher since the early 2000’s. After my education at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art I debuted on the art scene here in the PNW with my large-scale oil-portraits at various galleries, salons, cafe’s and other venues in the Seattle area. My wife, Kristin, and I moved from Seattle to Shanghai in 2015. I began working smaller in scale and experimenting with different substrates, color palettes, and ground colors. After four years in China we moved to Cape Town, South Africa where the natural beauty heightened my interest in landscape painting and expanded my use of color. I attempt to reflect the experiences of my travels in all of my art creation and convey a joyful and optimistic outlook that mirrors my personal philosophy and deep interest in this world we live in. |
